Mr. Thompson was born in The Pas, Manitoba but grew up in Vancouver. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Thompson was a self-employed owner/operator with Nickels Cartage, a local trucking company.
A trip to South Africa in 1979 for a family wedding planted a travel bug. Within a year Mr. Thompson sold his worldly possessions, bought a back pack and tent and an around the world plane ticket.
He visited the Phillipines, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Switzerland, England and finally Bermuda before returning to Vancouver one year later. During a six week stay in Southern Africa Mr. Thompson decided to revive his childhood dream, and become a lawyer.
Mr. Thompson commenced his university career at Simon Fraser University where he studied Political Science and History, with a focus on the Middle East studies.
Following two years at SFU he completed his degree at the University of Manitoba and went on to study law at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.
